Today’s digital banking innovations are incredibly convenient but can also be a bit intimidating to adults, let alone teens who haven’t had much experience navigating the financial world. As a parent, one of the greatest gifts you can give your child is to educate them financially – not only teaching them how to manage a budget and spend responsibly, but also how to safely use technology to work in their favor.

  • Start with a Checking Account

    At this age, children are just beginning to understand the concept of money.

      • Teach money management early by opening a checking account while your child is still under your roof..

      • Apply for a debit card and give your child a small balance to work with. It’s a great way to provide hands-on experience with real-world transactions while they’re still under your watch.

  • Use Technology to Your Advantage

    Teens and young adults want to access everything from their phones, and today’s banking technology makes that possible. However, it’s important to teach them how to use apps and online services safely and responsibly.

      • Download the financial institution’s mobile banking app then teach your child how to track spending and set alerts to monitor their spending. Also encourage them to use difficult passwords and/or biometric login options, such as face or fingerprint ID.

      • Load your child’s debit or credit card to a digital wallet, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. These services provide additional convenience and card protection when shopping online or paying in-person.

      • Help your child create a secondary savings account via the mobile banking app, enabling seamless savings for specific goals like a new gadget, special trip, or upcoming expenses. This not only helps them reach their goals but also teaches them the value of budgeting and saving responsibly.
